TGI_cast1The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol is one of the most famous comedies in world theatre. This version is a relatively recent translation and adaptation by the award-winning satirist Alistair Beaton, bringing to life its dazzling blend of preposterous characters and all too real situations. It has a freshness and modernity that belies the age and heritage of the original story.

In a small town in the middle of nowhere corruption is rife and the mayor and his cronies have got it made. But when they learn they’re going to be subject to an undercover government inspection they panic. Mistaking a penniless nobody for the powerful official they swiftly fall victim to their own stupidity and greed.

The play was performed with success at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2005 with Alistair McGowan in the role of the Inspector.
