Contractions was written by Mike Bartlett for the Royal Court in 2008 at a time of mass redundancies in the financial and investment markets in consequence of the Banking collapse. His most recent plays are Earthquakes in London for the National Theatre, adaptations of Chariots of Fire and Medea and the Olivier Award winning Bull and King Charles lll. He is also the writer of Doctor Foster, currently enthralling TV audiences.
In a series of increasingly disturbing interviews between Emma (Beth Barrett) in sales and her Senior Manager (Mary Taylor), this is a pitch black comedy with a surreal edge that explores the blurring of boundaries between our personal and professional lives and how far we will go to hold on to our job.
The workplace is depicted as a hostile environment in which the inherent messiness and unpredictability of human emotions is viewed by management as an inconvenient nuisance. The play therefore asks uncomfortable questions about how little infringements of privacy by an employer can ultimately snowball into something bigger and far more dangerous.
Contractions is directed by Rodney Pearson with Millie Hart (Stage Manager), Andrew Mair (Sound), Will Nicholson (Lighting Design), Victoria Franklin (Wardrobe) and Roger Jones (Set Build).
Support this production and enjoy a great night at the theatre for only £6.
