TWMA 1.2From the novel by Graham Greene
Adapted by Giles Havergal

Directed by Brian Hulme

This gentle comedy concerns Henry Pulling, a bank manager who took early retirement, and his “Aunt” Augusta. Unusually, two actors play Henry.

Henry’s main pastime now is growing dahlias…he meets his Aunt Augusta for the first time in over 50 years at his mother’s funeral. His father has been dead for 40 years. Aunt Augusta is a septuagenarian with “rapacious sexual appetites”. She is a delightful – if rather unusual – character! She has a manservant called Wordsworth (originally from Sierra Leone) who is also her lover. She takes Henry away from his quiet suburban existence into a world of adventure, crime and danger. In doing so, we see some highly unconventional details of her past!

Pulled further into his Aunt’s lifestyle, Henry travels to Brighton, Paris, Istanbul on the Orient Express and ultimately South America. In the end, he realises two things – that a life of adventure is far more desirable than tending dahlias and waiting for letters from a lost love….and secondly, that the woman he thought was his mother ……well, we don’t want to spoil the ending….you’ll just have to come and see it!

“Travels With My Aunt” was a West End hit in the early 90s, winning the Olivier Award for Best Play in 1993. It was made into an Oscar-winning film in 1972, starring Maggie Smith. It is often revived on both professional and amateur stages.
