The Sleeping Beauty

For our 2014 pantomime, Cobham Players presented a good old traditional show!

“The Sleeping Beauty” was from the classic fairy tale of a beautiful princess, the wonder of sleep and a handsome prince. It was directed by Keith Burgess.

A tale that has been enchanting audiences – children and adults alike – since 1697!

The Story

You know it really, don’t you?

Oh yes you do!

On the Christening Day of their daughter, the King and Queen are presented with gifts of blessings for the young child.  However, a wicked fairy (boo!), Carabosse (who has an equally wicked talking cat, Spindleshanks) bestows instead a curse (hiss!), then amended by a Good Fairy, Fairy Peaceful.

Eighteen years later, the princess duly falls for Carabosse’s curse and pricks her finger on a spinning wheel needle – cue spooky music! She falls asleep for 100 years…………….. Fairy Peaceful intervenes again and sends the rest of the Court to sleep too……………  And in the Cobham version, they all experience Zombies in their sleep!

All is not lost. A Prince arrives, kisses and wakes the princess, falls in love with her, everybody else wakes up and there is “a perfectly good happy ending”!  No wonder the story is loved by so many!

“Sleeping Beauty” was made into a cartoon film by Walt Disney in 1959 and has been adapted many times since.  This stage adaptation was written by Ben Crocker, son of actor and script writer John Crocker, who is one of the best pantomime writers today – and this version won the NODA SW “Best Pantomime” Award in 2012.
